Southern Highlands Waterfall Day Hiking, SC/NC

May 22 - May 29, 2021 -- $1250 ★

When people think of the Southern States, they often think of hot, steamy days and lazy rivers draped with Spanish moss. But not everyone knows that the Northwestern corner of South Carolina where it borders North Carolina contains a veritable cornucopia of magnificent waterfalls. An annual rainfall of around 80 inches -- only matched only by the Pacific northwest -- guarantees abundant water to feed these waterfalls. Southern Living Magazine describes them as ”tumbling like ribbons flowing over granite outcrops tucked into the craggy terrain of South Carolina’s upcountry”.

Our trip will take you to 12 of the most impressive and easiest to access falls in both South and North Carolina. Upper Whitewater Falls, careening 411 feet, is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. We will visit both Upper and Lower Whitewater Falls. Furthermore, we expect it to be warm enough to enjoy a refreshing dip in the cool waters of many of the pools we visit. As a bonus, Spring and early Summer wildflowers will be in bloom.

We will establish our base camp at Burrell’s Ford campground on the Chattooga River of Deliverance fame, so it’s possible we could hear banjo music. The Chattooga River was the first river to receive "wild and scenic" designation in the country. If you care to obtain an out of state fishing license, you can try your luck in the river. Your guides will be more than happy to prepare your fresh trout for dinner.

Weather

Weather is always an important consideration when hiking. May in the Carolinas starts to go from warm to hot. Daily temperatures are typically in the 70s & 80s but could drop into the 50s or rise into the 90s. Nights should be in the 40s & 50s. Please come prepared for the possibility of rain or hot temperatures. Here is the historical weather
