Dolly Sods / Monongahela National Forest, WV

Half Week Trip

Jul 11 - Jul 15, 2015 -- $700 ★★

While West Virginia is known for whitewater rafting, not many people know of an alpine wilderness destination in the Monongahela National Forest, called Dolly Sods. Dolly Sods is a roadless area considered one of the crown jewels of the Monongahela NF and has sweeping ridge views, health bogs, grassy plains, tundra-like features, canyons, creeks and spruce groves. Plus, we will spend an afternoon hanging out at an idyllic swimming hole during in mid-summer. For those who are limited by time constraints or just want to try out backpacking for the first time, this trip is a great introduction to Fatpacking.

Our journey will begin at the Southwest corner of Dolly and traverse counter-clockwise around the wilderness. There will be sweeping views such as those from iconic Lions Head. This loop is designed to give you a diverse sampling of the beauty this wilderness has to offer.

Weather

Weather is always an important concern when backpacking. Historical July weather averages in the high-70s during the day and mid-50s at night. However, be prepared for the possibility of day temperatures in the 90s and the 30s at night. July is often rainy, so be prepared for precipitation with high quality raingear that we hopefully won't need to use.
