Drive or fly into Bangor Airport (BGR).
The best time to arrive is between around Noon-3PM. However, if you can save a substantial
amount on your flight by arriving a few hours earlier or later, then do so.
We'll pick you up at the airport and shuttle you to

Hike 3.3 miles on the Katahdin Lake Trail to Avalanche Field Parking Area, elevation 1150.
Hike 1.6 dirt road miles to Roaring Brook Frontcountry Campground, elevation 1450'.

Today we will hike Mt. Katahdin and the Knife's Edge, the highest peak in Maine
and the quintessential Maine hike
We will be day hiking only, carrying perhaps 10 pounds. Despite this, we
will get an extremely early start with the goal of leaving camp by dawn.
Day-Hike 3.1 miles on the Chimney Pond Trail to Chimney Pond, elevation 2914'
Day-Hike 1.8 extremely steep miles on the Cathedral Trail to the summit of Mt. Katahdin, elevation 5267'
Day-Hike 1.1 miles exhilirating (but harrowing) miles along the Knife's Edge with almost 360 degree
unobstructed views to Pamola Peak, elevation 4919'
Day-Hike 3.2 miles on the Helon Trail back to Roaring Brook Campground, elevation 1450'
Camp at Roaring Brook Frontcountry Campground (sites TBD), elevation 1450'
Miles today: 9.2. Total miles: Hiking 35.8 or 36.8
Possible bailout: Roaring Brook Campground

Break camp and hike 7.4 miles back to our vehicle(s) on Katahdin Loop Road, elevation 1300'

This is the official end of the trip. You are welcome to spend the night at
the hotel, however if you drove and would like to get on the road or if you flew
and would like to schedule a late flight (or a red-eye if
this is a West Coast trip) you can definitely do so.
